Paul Groothuis
Sound Designer
Born in Holland, Paul Groothuis trained as a stage manager at Central School of Speech and Drama.
From 1981 to 1984, he worked in a recording studio in Central London, starting as a Tape-Operator and eventually become the studio’s resident engineer.
Between 1984 and 2003, he was a member of the Sound Department at the National Theatre where he designed the sound for over 120 productions, including; Anything Goes (NT and Drury Lane), His Dark Materials, Edmond, Henry V, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Coast of Utopia, My Fair Lady (NT and Drury Lane, UK and US tour), Hamlet (1987 and 2010), The Oedipus Plays, Summerfolk, The Merchant of Venice, The Rose Tattoo, Rafta Rafta, Candide, Oklahoma! (NT, Lyceum and Gershwin, New York), Oh, What a Lovely War!, A Little Night Music, Lady in the Dark, Guys and Dolls, Under Milk Wood, Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd, The Wind in the Willows, The Night of the Iguana, The Shaungraun.
Other credits include: The King and I (London Palladium, UK tour), Endgame (Albery), Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! (Sadler’s Wells, UK, US, Japan, Korea tours), Dorian Gray, Carman, Edward Scissorhands, Highland Fling and Cinderella. CoisCéim Dance Theatre’s Mermaids (Dublin). Carousel (NT, West End, Tokyo), Oliver! (Palladium and Drury Lane). Paul was awarded Live! Magazine’s Sound Designer of the Year Award for his work on Oklahoma! and Oh, What a Lovely War!.
Paul is a guest lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
